The Difference Between a Residential and Commercial Roof

By Stacy Mellete

For the untrained eye, all roofs look more or less the same. Roofing contractors, however, understand how residential and commercial roofing differ from one another. Today, we will discuss what makes each roofing system unique and what roof best fits your remodeling goals.

Residential Roofing

When you think of a roof, a residential roof is what you most likely think of. These roofs are pitched in a slope to allow water runoff. These roofs are usually installed with asphalt shingles or even metal. When you hire us for our roofing services, you are guaranteed to be working with a GAF Master Elite® roofing contractor.

When it comes to design and style, residential roofing has a lot of aesthetic choices, from color and materials used. Residential roofs are also easier to maintain, repair and even replace since shingles can be replaced piece by piece if necessary.

Commercial Roofing

For industrial purposes, low-slope or flat roofs are preferred. Commercial roofing is simpler and less appealing, but they focus on utility more than aesthetics. A flat roof provides a larger space for your building, which could be used as additional open space or storage. In addition, because of the simpler base design, they are easier to create with less manpower, making them ideal when you have more plans with your budget.

Roof repairs are easier to do a flat roof as well because contractors can simply walk on a flat surface instead of needing a harness or ladders. Though simpler, commercial roofing installation requires more expertise than a residential roof, as the contractor must navigate through the building’s airflow system and piping to maximize the roof’s protection.
