Hail and Storm-Damage Insurance Claims Do’s and Don’ts
By Stacy MelleteHomeowners insurance can be a big help to you when your home is damaged by storms, such as strong wind or hail storms. After all, it can help you pay for the repairs of the damage or recoup what you spent to repairing said damage. After a particularly strong storm, experts often recommend that you contact your insurance provider as soon as possible to initiate a claim.
In this post, roofing pros from Affordable Roofing Systems discuss the do’s and don’ts of hail-damage insurance claims.
Do: Document
If the weather forecast predicted that the storm will be a particularly strong one, it’s important that you take a photo of your home before the storm rolls in. Once the storm has passed and before making your insurance claim, make sure that you take note of the date and time of the damage. Take photos of the specific areas in your home with damage as well. Keep any estimates or receipts for repairs with you as well. That way, you’ll have evidence and documents to show your insurance provider.
Don’t: Use a Contractor Referred by the Insurance Company
While you’re more than welcome to use the contractor your insurance provider refers to you, that doesn’t necessarily mean you have to. As much as possible, choose the one that best fits your home and keep the recommended contractor as a backup if you run out of options.
Do: Look for the Best Contractor
Whether your home is inflicted with hail damage or storm damage, it’s important that you choose only a reputable roofing contractor to do the inspection. You can easily research online or ask for referrals but always make sure that they’re licensed in the state and if they have a good reputation with the Better Business Bureau.
Don’t: Accept An Offer From the Insurance Agent if It Doesn’t Cover the Scope of Work
The most important reason why you should have a contractor inspect the damage before you make your claim is to learn the full scope of work needed. That way, you have some documents to provide to your insurance provider when you tell them the amount needed for repairs.
If they offer you anything less the amount needed, don’t accept it and instead press your claim further. If you’re uncertain of going on your own, you can always hire someone who has knowledge of making such claims easier, such as Affordable Roofing Systems.
